Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh.
Five years ago I was at a church meeting dealing with stopping same sex marriage in Hawaii when a man got up and asked the question; “Aren’t you fighting against God when your try to stop the moral depravity of things like SSM when the Bible says that in the end times things will get worse and worse”?
I wanted to answer the question (as undoubtedly many others in the room would have loved to) meanwhile the church pastor rose up to make a vigorous and heartfelt defense of our civic action.
Yet to this day it seems many Christians continue to struggle over the same sort of questions?
“But and if that servant say in his heart, My lord delayeth his coming; and shall begin to beat the menservants and maidens, and to eat and drink, and to be drunken;”
The two mindsets that have the most potential to trip Christians up over this issue is; (One) The Lord Delays His Coming or (Two) He is coming back so soon I don’t have to worry about what going to happen next.
We all have the potential to goof-off. When a boss says he will be back “when we least expect it” whats being said is do your job like I’m going to walk in any second and don’t let me catch you slacking off! On the other hand many a job site tends to go quiet the closer it gets to quitting time.
In another scenario a servant starts to use the knowledge of God to feather his own nest (beat his fellow servants). When there is no expectation of the imminent return of the Lord Jesus then there is a corresponding drop in personal accountability.
Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing.
So what makes the most sense is Jesus (our Savior) gives us assurance of His imminent return AND (like a smart boss) makes sure we understand there is no slacking off doing what He told us to do while He is away.
We have been give authority to redeem people and nations, and the condition of our state, as well as the condition of people hearts, are important to the God who made us all.
